"Future-ready" now appears on almost every school brochure in Bangalore, usually next to a photograph of children holding a tablet. As a phrase it has been used so widely that it has stopped carrying information.
It is worth reclaiming, because the underlying question is a serious one: what should a school be doing now for a child who will finish Grade 12 in the 2030s and work in a world we cannot fully describe?
It is not about the number of devices
A school with a tablet on every desk and a teacher reading slides aloud is not future-ready. It is a traditional classroom with a larger electricity bill.
Technology is a tool. What determines whether a school is preparing children well is what children are asked to do — and whether they are doing the thinking, or watching someone else do it.
Thinking over memorising
The single clearest marker. Information is now instantly available to everyone; the ability to recall it is worth much less than it was thirty years ago. What has become more valuable is knowing which questions to ask, judging whether a source is trustworthy, and applying an idea in a situation you have not seen before.
This does not mean facts do not matter — you cannot think critically about a subject you know nothing about. It means the balance has shifted. Look for a school where children are regularly asked why and how do you know, not only what.
Technology used with judgement
The arrival of AI has made this urgent. A child who can prompt a chatbot into producing an essay has learned nothing. A child who can use the same tool to test their own reasoning, then recognise where it is confidently wrong, has learned something genuinely valuable.
The distinction is judgement, and it has to be taught deliberately. This is how we frame AI-supported learning at NCFE: as an instrument that a student directs and evaluates, never as a substitute for their own thinking. When you visit a school, ask specifically how they handle AI. "We block it" and "we let them use it" are both weaker answers than a considered explanation of how children are taught to use it well.
Making, not just receiving
Project work, experiments, building things, performing, presenting. These are not enrichment activities bolted onto the real curriculum — they are where conceptual understanding actually consolidates.
A child who has designed something, watched it fail and rebuilt it has learned about iteration and persistence in a way no chapter can deliver. Ask what proportion of a term involves children producing something rather than absorbing something.
Communication and collaboration
Almost every adult job involves explaining an idea to someone who does not already understand it, and working with people you did not choose. These are skills, and schools can build them: group projects with real interdependence, presentations to actual audiences, debate, drama, peer feedback, and structured practice in disagreeing without falling out.
The literacies that get missed
Two in particular. Financial literacy — most adults reach their first salary having never been taught about compounding, credit or budgeting, which is an odd gap for an education system to leave. And digital literacy in its fullest sense: privacy, misinformation, digital footprint, and the fact that a feed is an engineered product rather than a neutral window.
Wellbeing is the foundation, not the perk
This is the part most often treated as optional, and it is the part everything else rests on. An anxious, exhausted, unsupported child cannot think critically or collaborate well, regardless of the facilities available.
A genuinely future-ready school takes sleep, movement, friendship and emotional support as seriously as it takes the syllabus — because the evidence connecting wellbeing to academic outcomes is not soft, and because a generation entering a fast-changing world needs to be able to recover from setbacks.
How to check on a school visit
Rather than asking whether a school is future-ready — every school will say yes — ask these:
Can you show me something children made this term?
How often do children work in groups on something that takes more than one lesson?
How do you teach children to use AI tools well?
What happens in your classrooms when a child gives a wrong answer?
How do you assess understanding rather than recall?
What do you do to support a child who is anxious?
How do children practise speaking to an audience?
The specificity of the answers will tell you almost everything. Schools doing this work can describe it in detail. Schools using the phrase decoratively cannot.
Questions parents ask us
Does a focus on skills mean weaker board results?
It should not, and generally does not. Children who genuinely understand concepts, rather than having memorised them, tend to perform well in board examinations — and retain far more afterwards. The two goals are not in competition.
My child is not interested in coding or robotics. Are they going to be left behind?
No. Future-readiness is not one specific subject. A child heading towards design, law, teaching or business needs the same underlying capacities — thinking clearly, communicating well, adapting, working with others. Exposure to technology matters; specialising in it at twelve does not.
How much does the school matter compared with the home?
Both matter, and they compound. Curiosity encouraged at school and shut down at home does not survive. The most effective thing a parent can do is take your child's questions seriously — including the ones you cannot answer.
Is CBSE suited to this kind of teaching?
Yes. The framework has moved considerably towards competency-based and application-oriented assessment in recent years. How far that is realised depends far more on the individual school than on the board.
