School admission season involves more paperwork, more deadlines and more decisions than most families expect. This is the checklist we wish every parent had at the start rather than halfway through.
Six to twelve months before joining
Write down what you actually need: grades offered, distance, budget, board, and any specific support your child requires.
Shortlist three to five schools. More than that becomes noise.
Check each school's CBSE affiliation number and confirm up to which grade the campus runs.
Do the school-run commute at the real time of day, in real traffic.
Note each school's admission opening dates — they vary, and popular entry grades fill early.
Three to six months before
Visit each shortlisted campus, ideally on a working day when children are present.
Ask for the complete annual fee structure in writing.
Speak to at least one current parent per school if you can.
Begin collecting documents — this always takes longer than expected, particularly transfer certificates.
Submit applications and note every deadline in one place.
Documents to keep ready
Requirements vary slightly by school and by grade, but this covers the great majority of CBSE admissions in Bangalore:
Birth certificate (original plus copies) — this determines grade eligibility
Transfer Certificate from the previous school, for Grade 1 and above
Report cards from the previous two academic years
Passport-size photographs of the child, and of both parents
Aadhaar card of the child and of parents
Address proof
Immunisation and medical records, including any allergy details
Caste or category certificate, if applicable
Parent identity and, where required, income or employment proof
Keep scans of everything in one folder on your phone. You will be asked for the same documents more than once.
On the campus visit — what to actually look at
An ordinary classroom during an ordinary period, not just the labs and lobby
Whether the walls carry children's own work
How teachers respond to a wrong answer
Washrooms — genuinely one of the most honest indicators of how a school is run
The playground, and whether children are actually using it
Drinking water, the medical room, and the safety of stairwells and gates
How relaxed the children look with the adults around them
Questions to ask the admissions team
What is the class size and teacher-to-student ratio?
Up to which grade does this campus run?
What is the full annual cost, including transport, books, uniform and activities?
What has the fee increase been over the past three years?
How do you communicate with parents, and how often?
What is the process if my child falls behind in a subject?
How do you handle bullying?
What are the transport routes, and what safety measures are in place?
Is there a counsellor on campus?
What is the refund policy if we withdraw before the term begins?
Red flags worth noticing
Reluctance to share the affiliation number, or to put fees in writing
Pressure to pay immediately to "hold" a seat, with no documentation
Being shown only the lobby, labs and auditorium, never a working classroom
Vague answers on safety, bullying or how struggling children are supported
High teacher turnover, or evasiveness about it
No clear route for a parent to raise a concern
Comparing your options
Once offers are in, put them side by side on one page: total annual cost, daily commute, grades offered, class size, and your own honest impression of the atmosphere. Seeing them together usually makes the decision clearer than any amount of further deliberation.
And give reasonable weight to your instinct about how your child would feel walking in each morning. It is not sentimental — it is a genuine predictor of how the next few years will go.
After you accept
Collect the fee receipt and the written fee structure
Confirm transport route, pickup point and timings
Get the uniform and booklist early, before the rush
Note the academic calendar and the first PTM date
Save the class teacher's contact and the school's emergency number
Visit the campus once with your child before day one, so the building is familiar
Questions parents ask us
What is the right age for Grade 1 admission?
Most CBSE schools in Bangalore work to an age criterion set against a cut-off date, and the birth certificate is the deciding document. Confirm the exact cut-off with each school, as it can differ slightly.
What if we do not have a Transfer Certificate yet?
This is very common, especially with mid-year moves. Most schools will proceed with a provisional admission and a written undertaking to submit the TC. Tell the admissions team early rather than waiting.
Do we need to prepare our child for an admission interaction?
For pre-primary and early grades, it is usually an informal interaction to see how a child engages, not a test. Coaching a child for it tends to make them anxious and rarely helps. Sleep and a calm morning help far more.
Can we apply mid-year?
Often yes, subject to seat availability. Speak to the campus directly — mid-year transfers are routine in Bangalore.
