Every parent has watched this scene. Your child sits down with the textbook open, highlighter in hand, and works through chapter after chapter. Two hours pass. The pages are beautifully colour-coded. Then you ask a question from page three and they cannot answer it.
Nothing was wrong with their effort. Something was wrong with their method.
Re-reading and highlighting are the two most popular revision strategies among students, and they are also two of the least effective. They feel productive because the material becomes familiar — and familiarity is very easily mistaken for knowledge. The moment the book closes, the illusion goes with it.
The single most useful shift: stop putting information in, start pulling it out
The technique that consistently outperforms every other is retrieval practice — closing the book and trying to recall what is in it. It is uncomfortable, it feels slower, and it works, because the act of struggling to remember is what strengthens the memory. Recognising an answer on a page requires almost nothing of the brain. Producing it from nothing requires a great deal, and that effort is precisely the point.
In practice this is simple enough for a child to do alone:
Read a section once, properly, without a highlighter.
Close the book. Write down everything remembered on a blank sheet.
Open the book and check. The gaps are the revision list.
Revisit only the gaps, not the whole chapter again.
That last step is where most of the time is saved. Children re-read entire chapters because they have no way of knowing which parts they already know. A blank-sheet recall tells them in five minutes.
Spacing beats cramming, and it is not close
The second shift is spaced practice: the same total study time, distributed across days rather than concentrated the night before. Three thirty-minute sessions across a week will nearly always beat one ninety-minute session, because each return visit forces the brain to reconstruct something that has begun to fade — and reconstruction is what makes learning durable.
This is why the boards-eve all-nighter feels so effective and delivers so little. Cramming is excellent at getting information into short-term memory and almost useless at keeping it there.
For a family, spacing is mostly a scheduling decision, and it is easier to hold when the school year has visible anchor points. Our academic year runs in two terms, with Term I beginning on 10th April 2026 and Term II on 10th October 2026 — enough structure to plan backwards from, rather than forwards in a panic.
Time blocks: shorter than you think
We routinely advise parents to help their child build a study plan around the syllabus using time blocks rather than open-ended sessions. A block has a start, an end and one job. "Revise Science" is not a block. "Twenty-five minutes: recall the parts of the digestive system, then check" is a block.
Blocks work for a reason that has nothing to do with discipline. An open-ended session has no finish line, so a child paces themselves for endurance and drifts. A twenty-five minute block with a clear target invites a sprint. Most primary and middle-school children work well in twenty to thirty minute blocks with a real break — movement, water, no screen — in between.
Graphic organizers, for the subjects that resist lists
Some material is genuinely hard to hold as a list of facts: causes and consequences in History, processes in Biology, the arc of a story in Literature. For these, we encourage graphic organizers — mind maps, flowcharts, comparison tables, timelines. Making one requires deciding what connects to what, which is a far deeper act of processing than copying a definition.
The value is in the making, not the owning. A mind map your child builds from memory is a revision tool. A mind map downloaded from the internet is a poster.
What parents can do without becoming the study police
The most useful role a parent can play is not supervisor but quiz partner. Ten minutes of being asked questions at the dinner table is worth an hour of being watched at a desk, and it costs the relationship far less.
Two other things help more than they appear to. The first is protecting the environment — a consistent place to work, the phone in another room, siblings elsewhere. The second is protecting sleep, because revision done past a child's natural bedtime is largely wasted; memory is consolidated during sleep, and a shortened night undoes some of the work the evening just did.
And it is worth saying plainly to your child that struggling to recall something is not evidence that they are bad at the subject. It is the feeling of learning actually happening. Children abandon effective methods because effective methods feel harder — knowing why they feel harder is often enough to keep going.
A revision week that works
Put together, a realistic week looks like this. Monday: read and blank-sheet recall a chapter. Wednesday: recall it again from memory, then fill gaps. Friday: build a one-page organizer for the whole chapter. The following Wednesday: five minutes of recall to keep it warm. Total time is well under two hours, spread thin, and the material stays.
Compare that with four hours of highlighting the night before, and it becomes clear that the goal was never to study more. It was to study in a way the brain actually cooperates with.

How many hours a day should my child revise?
Fewer than most families assume, if the method is right. For primary children, twenty to thirty focused minutes on a school day is plenty. For middle school, forty-five to sixty minutes in blocks. For Grades 9 to 12 during board preparation, two to three focused hours — but spread through the week rather than stacked into weekends. Quality of attention matters far more than quantity of time.
Is it better to revise one subject deeply or switch between subjects?
Switching — known as interleaving — generally produces better long-term retention, especially in Mathematics, where mixing problem types forces a child to decide which method applies rather than repeating one method mechanically. Study two or three subjects in a session rather than one for three hours.
My child says they revise better with music. Is that true?
Instrumental music at low volume is generally harmless and can help block a noisy household. Music with lyrics competes directly with reading and verbal memory and usually costs more than it gives. A simple test settles it: try a blank-sheet recall with and without, and compare what comes out.
How do I help without turning every evening into an argument?
Shift from monitoring to participating. Ask to be quizzed rather than checking whether work is done, and ask about the method rather than the marks — "what did you get stuck on?" opens a conversation, "did you finish?" closes one. Does this work for children who find studying genuinely difficult?
Yes, and often more dramatically, because children who struggle are usually the ones putting in the most unproductive hours.
