Grade 1 brings a new set of questions for parents. Will my child feel comfortable asking the teacher for help? Will they make friends? What happens if reading or writing feels difficult? And will the school day work for our family?
Those questions deserve space alongside the application form. As you consider NCFE Grade 1 registrations for 2027–28, use the admission conversation to understand both the learning programme and the everyday support your child may need.
Start with the age requirement
For NCFE’s 2027–28 registration cycle, a child must have completed six years as on 1 June 2027 for Grade 1. That means a date of birth on or before 1 June 2021.
A child born on 1 June 2021 turns six on the reference date. A child born on 2 June 2021 is still five that day. If the birthday is close to the cut-off, share the birth-certificate date with your preferred campus before completing the paid application form.
The age check is one part of registration. The campus also needs to confirm Grade 1 availability and guide you through the admission process.
Talk about the child you know at home
Perhaps your child tells long stories at home but becomes quiet around new adults. Perhaps they love listening to a book but need help with writing. Or they are excited about school and worried about the morning goodbye at the same time.
Give the campus team that honest picture. Describe what your child enjoys, what they currently do independently and where help is useful. Share their previous school experience and any learning, communication or daily-care needs you want the team to understand.
For example, you could say: “My child enjoys picture books and talks about the story, but is hesitant to answer in a group. How would you help them participate in Grade 1?” This is a sample question, not a description of a real student.
Understand how reading and writing will be taught
If your child is still building these skills, ask what the school expects at entry and how teaching progresses during Grade 1. Get the campus’s answer before drawing conclusions from another child’s reading level or a worksheet from another school.
Useful questions include:
How do teachers understand each child’s starting point in reading, writing and number work?
What does a typical Grade 1 lesson look like?
How is a child supported when they need more time or a different explanation?
What practice is expected at home, and how will parents receive guidance?
Ask for an example of the learning approach during the programme briefing. The aim is to leave knowing what your child’s classroom experience would involve, rather than only the names of subjects.
Make settling in part of the conversation
Friendships, asking for help and getting used to unfamiliar adults can be as much on a parent’s mind as schoolwork. During your visit, ask how the campus handles the first days and how families communicate with the Grade 1 team.
“Who would notice if my child is quiet or upset, and how would you let us know?” is a useful question. So is, “Whom should we contact if the morning goodbye is becoming difficult?” Ask about the arrangements at the campus you are considering; do not assume they are identical everywhere.
Before attending, confirm whether your child should join the appointment and what any interaction with the school will involve. You can then explain the visit calmly and accurately.
Picture a whole school day
Think through the day from leaving home to returning. Ask about Grade 1 timings, meals, toilet routines, supervision and authorised collection. If your child needs help with a daily task, discuss it directly with the team.
Check transport route availability for your address and the proposed pick-up and drop-off arrangements. If daycare is needed at CV Raman Nagar or Indiranagar, confirm whether it is available for your child’s age, along with the hours and places available.
Keep fee questions with your chosen campus. Its page FAQ and admissions team can explain the applicable fees, what is included, payment dates and refund terms. Clarify these before confirming an offer.
Prepare through familiar moments at home
Keep preparation manageable. You can:
Share a story and talk about the pictures or characters, giving your child time to answer.
Practise using their bag, water bottle and lunchbox together, with help where needed.
Rehearse the morning routine so there is time to get ready without rushing.
Ask what they are looking forward to and what worries them, and listen before offering reassurance.
These are home preparation ideas, not NCFE admission criteria or a test checklist. For more ideas about routines and feelings around starting school, see UNICEF’s parent guide to preparing for preschool. It offers early-years guidance; NCFE’s Grade 1 age requirement is stated above.
Know the steps before arranging your visit
NCFE’s registration order for 2027–28 is:
Enquire.
Fill in the application form.
Arrange a campus visit.
Programme briefing.
Meet the Principal.
Offer of admission, subject to availability in the requested grade.
The campus visit is step 3, after the enquiry and paid application form. Confirm the application fee, payment method and terms with the team before paying. The campus will explain the arrangements for the programme briefing and Principal meeting.
Keep your child’s birth certificate, recent passport-size photographs, Aadhaar details and residential address proof ready to discuss. For Grade 1, also check the previous report card and Transfer Certificate requirements, the formats accepted and when documents must be submitted. Tell the team if a document is still with the previous school.
Bring a few questions that matter to your family
Download the parent preparation pack (PDF, 3 pages). It includes a document checklist, age worksheet and campus-visit planner. Print it or fill it in on your device.
Choose two or three priorities for your visit: perhaps help with reading, settling in and the daily journey. Record the campus’s answers, anything still to confirm and the next appointment. That gives you something concrete to discuss as a family afterwards.
Grade 1 enquiries can be made for CV Raman Nagar, Indiranagar, Mandur or Ballari (Bellary). Availability is confirmed by the campus. CV Raman Nagar, Indiranagar and Mandur are CBSE-affiliated; Ballari follows a CBSE-pattern curriculum.
When you are ready, send an enquiry with your child’s date of birth, current school or grade if applicable, and preferred campus. Include one question you would like the team to help you answer.
