Hybrid Learning Is the Bridge Between Today’s Students and Tomorrow’s Jobs

Business.com in its 10th October, 2024 edition featured an article Is a College Degree Necessary for Success? HBR in one of its editions on 4th February 2023, had an article on ‘How important is a college degree compared to experience?’ Such articles do make one think of the trends of the modern day markets and the attributes and skills they target for hiring.

The simple fact that the workplace has changed is at the core of this shift, the world of work has transformed. It is essential to understand the key contributors for such a trend in work abilities. Employers are prioritising digital literacy, critical thinking, adaptability, demonstrated skills and problem-solving abilities over formal education, according to the World Economic Forum‘s 2023 Future of Jobs Report. Online platforms like Coursera, EdX etc provide highly skilled certification which cater to individual interests and are industry recognised. Rising educational costs allows many students to shift to such platforms.

Real-world experience builds intelligence and is becoming increasingly important and gains huge popularity. Internships, entrepreneurial projects, and volunteer work give students the opportunity to learn through action a method that many believe is more effective than just sitting in a classroom. ‘Learning by doing’ approach helps nurture problem-solving skills, creativity, and leadership-traits that are highly sought after in today’s competitive job market.

However, a balanced perspective is needed and wiping away degrees and describing them as irrelevant is not right. Certain degrees like medicine, law and engineering would require a deep understanding of concepts and need to be coupled with internships that allow one to explore their skills. Skilled training jobs would require a vocational certification.

The specific requirements of an industry can determine the qualifier for the job. Certain industries like tech, entertainment and entrepreneurship are highly dependent on skills, networking and experience.

So how could we prepare our children for a volatile future?

Personalised Education is the way forward with schools setting the base for experiential learning, skill development and internships in order for children to learn beyond the classroom. Schools need to integrate entrepreneurial thinking, and essential life skills into their curricula. I believe this is ‘Survival Skills. ‘Higher education still provides significant advantages beyond just knowledge of a subject. Colleges and universities foster critical thinking, create valuable professional connections, and teach academic discipline.

The real issue isn’t whether degrees have become irrelevant, but rather how they need to adapt. We should aim for a hybrid model that combines formal education with skill based learning, entrepreneurial initiatives, internships, and ongoing reskilling. This blended approach ensures that students are not only academically qualified but also ready for the industry and equipped for the future.

For educators and parents, embracing a new mindset is essential. It is time to empower individuals to pursue career paths aligned with their interests, skills, and aspirations, while thoughtfully considering financial realities.
